A Legacy of Land, Family and Stewardship
From muddy fields to a thriving legacy, P&H Farms is a story of friendship, faith, and the unwavering love of the land—now carried forward by the next generation with purpose and pride.
In the heart of Western Kentucky, the story of P&H Farms is a testament to the power of partnership, family and unwavering hard work. Founded in 1996 by two long-time friends, Philip and Chris, the operation began with a challenging start. Battling through a relentless, soggy spring, the pair worked side-by-side in rows of mud to plant their first crop in their vast river bottoms field. This first plant required profound grit and refusal to fail, solidifying a commitment stronger than the challenges they faced.
A Complementary Foundation for Growth
What began as a few soggy acres has turned into a multi-generational enterprise. Today, P&H Farms successfully produces corn, soybeans, wheat and raises 1,500 head of American Wagyu cattle. The partnership between the families, though not bound by blood, is built on a deep connection and shared values. As Chris Hooks explained, their key to resilience is a complementary approach: "I feel that my weaknesses are Philip’s strengths and his weaknesses are my strengths."
The next generation, including Philip’s daughter, Cali, emphasizes the benefit of this collaborative structure. She noted, "the burden of responsibility is a shared one and you gain a trusted person to help with decisions and offer fresh perspectives and ideas." For Cali and her brother, Rhett, agriculture is not just a profession, but a life plan that provides the ultimate drive to uphold and grow their family's heritage.
Cultivating the Next Generation and Stewardship
Today, the founders are deliberately preparing the next generation. This isn't just succession planning; it's ensuring the farm’s heritage continues. Philip and Chris’ children are given opportunities for leadership, allowing them to gain equity, make their own decisions and learn quickly through daily, hands-on lessons. For Cali, knowing she has this legacy to uphold provides her purpose, recognizing that P&H Farms only exists due to the sacrifices and vision of her grandparents and parents.
The farm operates by a simple motto: God, family and farming. This commitment extends to the land itself, with a goal to improve the ground every day and leave it better than they found it. This focus on stewardship and sustainability was championed by Cali’s grandfather, who adopted no-till farming.
Cali also feels the global impact of their work. Seeing 50 barges a year transport their grain highlights the farm's role in feeding people all over the globe.

A Partnership Built on Shared Understanding
P&H Farms’ collaborative spirit extends to its financial relationships, particularly with Farm Credit Mid-America. As a third-generation borrower, Cali views the customer-owned cooperative as an essential partner that understands the cyclical nature of agriculture and shares the farm’s core values. Their Financial Officer, John David, and his team, many of whom come from farming backgrounds, provide a connection. This partnership, bolstered by the customer-owned cooperative’s patronage program†, reinforces a shared commitment to securing the future of rural communities and agriculture®.
“I don’t want to work with someone who has no idea what I’m doing every day,” Cali stated, emphasizing the value of working with a partner who truly understands their lifestyle and challenges. This partnership with Farm Credit Mid-America helps secure the future of both the farm and their broader rural community.

Continuing the Calling
Cali consistently seeks new opportunities to innovate and grow the farm. In September 2024, she made a personal purchase: a farm coming up for auction that her father and grandfather had farmed decades before. The same property her father took her and her brother fishing as children.
“It was an honor that this was my first purchase,” she shared. Cali is now bringing the farm into production, with hopes of one day bringing her own children there to see everything that three generations before them have built. Through dedication, strong partnerships and their love for the land, the P&H team continues to cultivate a multi-generational legacy.
